Captain Billy's Whiz Bang (used)
Captain Billy's Whiz Bang was one of the most popular and notorious humor magazines running from 1919-1936. It was created by Wilford Hamilton Fawcett, who had been a captain in the U.S. Army during World War I and gained the nickname Captain Billy. Fawcett would later tell reporters that he had started his magazine to give the doughboys, as World War I servicemen were popularly called, something to laugh about. Captain Billy's Whiz Bang debuted in October 1919. It was a magazine of jokes and funny stories. The humor reflected the American cultural climate of the time. Fawcett touched on such topics as the shortening of women's skirt lengths, bobbed hair, illegal alcohol, and speakeasies. Fawcett Publications, Crest Book #118, published in 1955. Price is $10.00.
It Rhymes With Lust (used)
Reprint of It Rhymes with Lust, a "picture novel" originally published in 1950. It is an early example of a graphic novel. Written by Arnold Drake and Leslie Waller (under the pseudonym "Drake Waller"), with black-and-white art by Matt Baker and inker Ray Osrin. It was originally published by the comic book and magazine company St. John Publications. Clarence Matthew Baker (December 10, 1921 – August 11, 1959) was an American comic book artist and illustrator, best known for drawing early comics heroines such as the costumed crimefighter Phantom Lady, and romance comics. Active in the 1940s and 1950s Golden Age of comic books, he is one of the first known African-American artists to find success in the comic-book industry. Drake would go to write for comics publishers DC and Marvel, for which he created such characters as Doom Patrol, Deadman and the original Guardians of the Galaxy. According to Drake, he and Waller created the concept of "picture novels" in 1949 while in college in New York City, conceiving "a more developed comic book—a deliberate bridge between comic books and book books. ... What we planned was a series of picture novels that were, essentially, action, mystery, Western and romance movies on paper". Armed with a two-page sample of an example story, "One Man Too Many!", Drake and Waller convinced Archer St. John of St. John Publications to launch a line of mass market paperbacks containing original comics work that would appeal to the general public. 2007 reprint edition, Dark Horse Books. Hank Janson is both a fictional character and a pseudonym of English author Stephen Daniel Frances. Frances wrote a series of thrillers by, and featuring, Hank Janson, beginning with When Dames Get Tough (1946). Many of the later "Hank Janson" novels were the work of other authors. Hank Janson was the most popular and successful of British pulp fiction authors of the 1940s-1950s. His books were violent "pseudo-American" thrillers sold in paperback editions featuring erotic cover art, and it is estimated that some five million copies were sold by 1954. Jerry Cotton - 8 DVD set (used)
Jerry Cotton is an FBI agent whose adventures take place in and around New York City. He first appeared in a long-running series of spy novels created in 1954 in Germany. One could summarise the motto of the series as "Crime without Sex", as women arise as characters only once in a while. Important figures of the series include, besides Cotton, his partner Phil Decker, FBI-chief John D. High, veteran agent Neville, Annie Geraldo, Zeerookah, June Clark, Roby O'Hara, Myrna, Windermeere and his Smith & Wesson, a 38 Caliber Smith & Wesson Special. Jerry Cotton drives a red Jaguar E-type, built in 1966. Starting in the 1960s, a series of eight films based on the Cotton novels were made, the first four in black-and-white, the last four in color. The character of Jerry Cotton was played by American actor George Nader, and his companion Phil Decker was played by the German actor Heinz Weiß. The director of the films was Harald Reinl. The film's music was composed by Peter Thomas including the "Jerry Cotton March", that also was released on a soundtrack-single. In the 1990s the soundtracks of the movies were re-released on CDs. These DVDs were produced by Sinister Cinema and are still available from them new if you prefer. Our price is less than half their best price. All videos were viewed once and are in great shape. On The Air: Complete Series - David Lynch
On the Air is an American television sitcom created by Mark Frost and David Lynch. It was broadcast from June 20 to July 4, 1992 on the American Broadcasting Company (ABC). The series follows the staff of a fictional 1950s television network, Zoblotnick Broadcasting Company (ZBC), as they produce a live variety program called The Lester Guy Show—often with disastrous results. On the Air was produced by Lynch/Frost Productions and followed Lynch and Frost's previous series, Twin Peaks. In the United States only three of the seven filmed episodes were aired,[1] but the first-and-only season was broadcast in its entirety in the United Kingdom and several other European countries. IMDB rates it 7.2/10. Fan produced DVD. New/sealed. Price is $10.00.
The Outsider: Anatomy of a Crime (used)
Anatomy of a Crime is comprised of two episodes from the 1968-69 TV series The Outsider. Darren McGavin earns top billing as David Ross, an ex-cop who became a private eye after cooling his heels in prison on a trumped-up murder charge. Ever on the outside looking in, Ross only accepts cases from other "outsiders" who've been wronged by society. Most of the footage in Anatomy of a Crime consists of the 60-minute Outsider episode "There Was a Little Girl", wherein a young woman claims to be the kidnapped-in-infancy daughter of a wealthy industrialist. Joan Blondell, Simon Scott, and Dorothy Green do guest-star duty in this 1968 installment. Woven into the continuity of "There Was a Little Girl" are scenes from another 1968 episode, "Tell It Like It Was...and You're Dead." Marilyn Maxwell, Whitney Blake, Jackie Coogan, and Ted Knight play major roles in this story of an ex-burlesque queen who receives death threats after announcing plans to write a tell-all autobiography. Fan produced collections of TV cartoons from the 1950s-1960s. Included are the following:
1. Loop De Loop - No disc art. Loopy De Loop is a theatrical cartoon short series produced and directed by William Hanna and Joseph Barbera after leaving MGM and opening their new studio, Hanna-Barbera Productions. 48 cartoons were produced between 1959 and 1965, and released to theatres by Columbia Pictures. It was the final theatrical cartoon series to be produced by Bill Hanna and Joe Barbera, as well as the only one to be produced by their own studio.
2. Quick Draw McGraw - No disc art. Three discs. Quick Draw McGraw is the protagonist and title character of The Quick Draw McGraw Show. He is an anthropomorphic white horse, wearing a red Stetson cowboy hat, a red holster belt, a light blue bandana, and occasionally spurs. He was voiced by Daws Butler. All 45 of his cartoons that originally aired between 1959 and 1961 were written by Michael Maltese, known best for his work at the Warner Bros. cartoon studio. The cartoon was nominated for an Emmy Award in 1960. His main catchphrases were "Hold on there!" and "I'll do the thin'in' around here and don't you forget it!" Also if he got hurt he would often say "Ooooh that smarts!"
3. Ruff & Reddy - No disc art. Six discs. The Ruff and Reddy Show (also known as Ruff and Reddy) is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions for NBC. It is one of the earliest Saturday-morning cartoons, and the first series made by Hanna-Barbera. The series follows the adventures of Ruff, a smart and steadfast cat; and Reddy, a good-natured and brave (but not overly bright) dog. It was presented by Screen Gems, the television arm of Columbia Pictures. It premiered in December 1957 and ran for 156 episodes until April 1960, comprising three seasons total. It was repeated on NBC Saturday mornings in 1962–63.
4. Tex Avery: The Complete MGM Collection - Five discs. Set is new/still sealed. Frederick Bean "Tex" Avery (February 26, 1908 – August 26, 1980) was an American animator, cartoonist, director, and voice actor. He was known for directing and producing animated cartoons during the golden age of American animation. His most significant work was for the Warner Bros. and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer studios, where he was crucial in the creation and evolution of famous animated characters such as Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Porky Pig, Elmer Fudd, Droopy, Screwy Squirrel, The Wolf, Red Hot Riding Hood, and George and Junior.
5. The Secret Squirrel Show - No disc art. Secret Squirrel is a cartoon character created by Hanna-Barbera and also the name of his segment in The Atom Ant/Secret Squirrel Show, which debuted in 1965. He was given his own show in 1966, titled The Secret Squirrel Show, but was reunited with Atom Ant for one more season in 1967. The half-hour The Secret Squirrel Show included three individual cartoon segments: "Secret Squirrel", "Squiddly Diddly" and "Winsome Witch". Secret Squirrel first appeared in a prime-time animated special called The World of Secret Squirrel and Atom Ant, which aired on NBC on September 12, 1965. Secret Squirrel was a parody of the spy genre, and most of the shorts parodied elements of the James Bond films. Secret Squirrel was also known as "Agent 000".
6. Super-Chicken: The Complete Series - Has disc art. Super Chicken is a segment that ran on the animated television series George of the Jungle. It was produced by Jay Ward and Bill Scott, who earlier had created the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons. It debuted September 9, 1967, on ABC. Super Chicken (voiced by Bill Scott in a Boston Brahmin accent) is an anthropomorphic chicken and superhero who is the alter-ego of wealthy Henry Cabot Henhouse III (whose name was a play on Henry Cabot Lodge Jr.). He has a vegetarian lion sidekick named Fred (voiced by Paul Frees impersonating Ed Wynn) who wears an inside-out sweatshirt with a backwards F on it and acts as Henry's servant when in his civilian lifestyle. When danger rears its ugly head, Henhouse takes his "Super Sauce" (often from a martini glass), prepared by Fred, and dons his "Super Suit," which consists of a plumed cavalier's hat, cape, Wellington boots, mask and sword.
7. Tom Terrific - Set is new/still sealed. Tom Terrific is a 1957–1959 animated series on American television, presented as part of the Captain Kangaroo children's television show. Created by Gene Deitch under the Terrytoons studio (which by that time was a subsidiary of CBS, the network that broadcast Captain Kangaroo), Tom Terrific was made as twenty-six stories, each split into five episodes, with one five-minute episode broadcast per day. The first thirteen stories were filmed in 1957, with the second set in 1958. Captain Kangaroo continued to rerun the episodes for many years. Starting in 1962, Captain Kangaroo broadcast Tom Terrific every other week, alternating with Terrytoons' Lariat Sam. Drawn in a simple black-and white style reminiscent of children's drawings, the show features a gee-whiz boy hero, Tom Terrific, who lives in a treehouse and can transform himself into anything he wants, thanks to his magical funnel-shaped "thinking cap", which also enhances his intelligence. He has a comic lazybones of a sidekick, Mighty Manfred the Wonder Dog, and an arch-foe named Crabby Appleton, whose motto is, "I'm rotten to the core!"
8. Tooter Turtle - Set is new/still sealed. Tooter Turtle is a cartoon about a turtle that first appeared on TV in 1960, as a segment of the King Leonardo and His Short Subjects program. "Tooter Turtle" debuted on NBC, on Saturday, October 15, 1960, and ran for 39 original episodes through July 22, 1961. These episodes were later rerun as backups on other cartoon shows, but no more original episodes were made.
9. Wally Gator - No disc art. Two discs. Wally Gator is an American animated television series produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions that originally aired as one of the segments from the 1962–1963 block The Hanna-Barbera New Cartoon Series. The other two segments that compose the series are Touché Turtle and Dum Dum and Lippy the Lion and Hardy Har Har. The segment consisted of 52 episodes over one year. Wally Gator appears in the HBO Max series Jellystone! where he is portrayed as the town ditz and played by Jeff Bergman. Wally Gator (voiced by Daws Butler impersonating Ed Wynn) is an anthropomorphic, happy-go-lucky alligator who wears a collar and a pork pie hat. Although his catchy theme song describes him as a "swingin' alligator of the swamp," his home is in the city zoo. Mr. Twiddle (voiced by Don Messick) is the zookeeper who keeps a close watch on Wally, who likes to check out what life is like in the outside world.
